Dave King, founder and CEO of Move 37, says that artificial intelligence (AI) can improve productivity, but it does have its limitations. AI works based on the algorithms and data sets underlying the software, which it uses to make decisions. Some of these decisions may have inherent biases, he explains. This technology can step in and augment or take over certain tasks, which can become like having additional team members available. King says that AI has the potential to take over the tasks that many employees don't like to do but have to do as part of their job. By taking over these tasks, AI enables productivity and job satisfaction to increase among employees. To implement AI to take over tasks, companies need to be aware of the time it takes to implement the software, the time it will save workers and whether AI will consistently operate to expectations. More often than not, King notes, companies use AI in partnership with humans. He adds that there are four roles for AI: the computer as nanny, the computer as pen pal, the computer as a coach and the computer as a colleague. For example, he says computer as nanny is when the AI supervises the worker, creates the task and then provides the worker with the next task to complete, while computer as coach offers additional support to the worker in the form of education or training. AI can be task or time managers, and AI can move beyond being a tool to being a more collaborative and creative colleague in the workforce, King says.
